Prosecutors seek five years for Indonesian rock star over sex tapes

Jakarta - Indonesian prosecutors on Thursday requested a five-year sentence for a rock star over videos allegedly showing him having sex with two of the country's most famous television stars, a news report said. Chief prosecutor Rusmanto, who like many Indonesians uses only one name, told a district court in the West Java city of Bandung that Nazriel Ilham, better known as Ariel, had violated a 2008 anti-pornography law, the state-run Antara news agency reported. Ariel, 29, was detained in June after two videos allegedly showing him with Luna Maya and Cut Tari, both models and TV presenters, hit the internet. Rusmanto said the heavy sentence was warranted because Ariel was still unwilling to admit that he was the man in the videos, according to Antara. 'As an artist and public figure, the defendant has failed to set a good example to the public because of his unwillingness to admit his guilt,' he was quoted as saying. The scandal has shocked Indonesia, a mainly Muslim nation where many people have conservative views on sex. It has dominated local news. The affair has been dubbed Peterporn, a play on the name of Ariel's rock band, Peterpan. Indonesia has enjoyed relatively unfettered media freedom since the fall of autocratic president Suharto in 1998 after 32 years in power.
